Retina, macula, vitreous humour
Retina is a photosensitive organ of vision. It covers the internal surface of the eye as a thin membrane. It contains photosensitive cells - rods, cones and nerve fibres. The retina captures an image like the photosensitive chip in the digital camera and it sends it to the cerebral cortex by way of optic nerve.
Macula (yellow spot) - the central part of the retina - is the most important for sharp vision, reading, driving a car, watching TV and distinguishing faces. Macula diseases lead to the loss of sharp vision.
Peripheral retina is used for peripheral vision. The retina is supplied with oxygen through retinal blood vessels, arteries and veins. Their disorders (closures or bleeding) lead to serious vision disorders.
Vitreous humour is a clear tissue that fills the eye cavity and adjoins to the retina from the inside. Vitreous humour disorders lead to retina and vision disorders.
Prevention and treatment
A lot of retinal and vitreous diseases can be dealt with through surgery. The surgery is performed in an ambulatory setting. The instruments enter the eye via mini incisions in the sciera.
